Off the Streets, Back to School

Impact

352 Children Back to School

Region

Nigeria

Education in Nigeria faces significant challenges, notably a high number of out-of-school children. According to recent estimates, Nigeria has the largest number of out-of-school children in the world, with figures suggesting around 10.5 million children aged 5 to 14 are not in formal education. This represents about 20% of the total global number of out-of-school children, marking a critical issue for the country.

The causes of this educational crisis are complex and deeply rooted. Socioeconomic factors, in particular, cast a long shadow, as many families are unable to bear the financial burden associated with schooling, such as tuition, uniforms, and textbooks. This financial strain is a significant barrier, preventing children from accessing education and perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

Further exacerbating the issue is the impact of conflict, particularly in the northeastern regions of Nigeria, where insurgent activities have led to the destruction of educational facilities and made certain areas dangerous for children to attend school. The combination of insecurity, economic barriers, and cultural factors creates a complex challenge that affects millions of Nigerian children, limiting their access to primary education and their potential for future economic empowerment.

Off the Street, Back to School

How We Solve This Problem

The “Off the Street, Back to School” initiative is a compassionate program focused on ensuring education for children in Africa who are at risk of dropping out or have already left school due to financial constraints. This initiative aims to reintegrate out-of-school children into the educational system by providing full yearly scholarships, covering their school fees, and ensuring their continued learning. We also provide school supplies, textbooks, and other resources to keep the child in school. The program also ensures a child can pay the fees for necessary exams, including JAMB and WAEC. The selection of beneficiaries is based on financial need and academic performance, encompassing students from primary, secondary, and undergraduate levels. Through this targeted support, the initiative strives to break the cycle of poverty and offer these children a pathway to a brighter future, emphasizing the transformative power of education.
